Spring (Decluttering) is Calling!

Mostly Organized Dispatch

Hello and Happy Friday!

With the long weekend, my week was a bit wonky, so I’m sending this Dispatch a day late.

It’s finally warming up a bit over here, and it’s making me think about spring decluttering.

This is usually the time of year when I just want to get rid of everything, burn it all down and start over. A bit dramatic, I know 🙄! I think it’s a natural consequence of being cooped up during winter, but the urge is strong!

🐿️ When this overcaffeinated squirrel energy comes on, it’s tempting to just add Spring Clean the House to my To-Do list. But that’s waaaaay too big to tackle, and I will have that item on my list for months if I’m not intentional about it!

So instead, let’s make a plan:

  • STEP 1 - Brain-dump all the areas to tackle: garage, bedroom closet, travel gear… be as specific as possible.

  • STEP 2 - Pick a small area to start with for a quick win: flattening all the cardboard boxes from deliveries and putting them in the recycling bag, for example.

  • STEP 3 - Break down the tasks, focus on one area at a time and plan it in your calendar: main front closet this Saturday.

  • STEP 4: Keep going until you’re done. There is no finish line. When you say you’re done, then you’re DONE!

Until next time,

Tips From A Pro Organizer

🔆 TIP | Decluttering Tip From A Professional Organizer: Follow a Few Simple Rules

If you decide to do some spring decluttering, the first “rule“ to follow would be: Don’t Buy Containers Before You Start!

You will probably want to go buy cute organizing containers to motivate yourself, but please resist the urge! You don’t know yet what you will need or how much. Reducing is always the first step, not buying more.

You may find that you have less to organize and therefore need fewer containers than you thought, once you’ve decluttered.

A long time ago, I created a checklist to help me remember everything I need to do as a homeowner.

You can find the list here and download it for free.

Decluttering takes time. There are a gazillion tiny decisions to be made, and decluttering a life is just not that easy.
